Been there twice now and both times the servers were outstanding. They had great knowledge about the beer selection and offered recommendations to everyone at the table that were correct. The owners spent time at the table during both visits, and it wasn't the usual "fly-by" that you see at so many other establishments. They were interested in us and ensuring we had an enjoyable visit. Good food choices. Try it. I think you will go back.
My wife and I went on a date to McGowan's. The atmosphere was nice, and the staff were very friendly. The space seems a little tight, and as the evening progresses and more people arrive, the ambiance is diminished. The portion sizes are large and perfect to split if neither are very hungry. The selection of beer and wine was impressive, and the staff was very happy to allow me to try a few beers prior to selecting one for the night. (something I appreciate greatly). Overall the experience was nice and this will be a great place to come for a relaxing evening. Although, we probably won't be back for a nice date night. (too loud)
The staff, food and atmosphere are amazing. All the food I've tried is delicious and the bacon flight was to die for. The staff are warm and friendly and full of helpful suggestions. Every time I've been in the owners are in and checking on everyone. Great place to grab a drink with friends or go on a date. This is a gem on Tallahassee that you shouldn't miss.
This place was good when it newly opened. NE Tallahassee and the Bradfordville / Killearn area lacked an upscale modern bar setting suitable for a middle class professional crowd. Bannerman crossing did that, and with that came McGowan's. Like all businesses, they were super friendly when they newly opened, it was clear that the owners had an unsure feeling of how they will fair in a competitive business. I went to McGowan's when it newly opened and a couple more times after that. Their beer selection was decent, 44 beers on tap. A small menu that is easily exhausted in two visits and makes you feel you shouldn't eat anymore even if you're hungry. The owners emphasize drinks over food, which is fine but also where everything goes wrong. I will come to this later.
Amazing spot. Huge beer and wine list. The tuna melt I got was delicious. There's egg rolls on the menu. Any place with egg rolls typically gets put in the awesome category.
About the menu: The drinks menu does not encompass beer varieties that appeal to many. As much as they are craft beers, they are also beers that you wouldn't want to drink if there are other options. They don't have the major local brews in Florida or even in Tallahassee. So you're limited to a crappy menu that you have to adjust to just because you are there. The food menu is the least expansive I have seen. They think they are being inventive but it's nothing but junk fast food in some ethnic format that is made to look pretty.
Do not go this place. It sucks a lot.
The thing most annoying about this place is how proud and obnoxious the owners and employees are. With their initial success after opening, the owners care less. They treat customers as if you should be thankful to them because they opened this place. They hired family members who care less. They stand around and talk and play whilst customers wait for service. They have taken everyone for granted. The owners stand and gossip customers in front of other customers. The employees who serve do not respond to customer requests. When you ask for a drink on the menu, they use that as an opportunity to joke among each other by guessing the tap number of the beer. Service is the most horrible I have seen in a bar of similar stature.
