I started last semester when the studio charged $50 per semester for ceramic access. This semester, they raised their price to $65. What they didn't tell me when I signed up, was that this now only covered half of the semester. So the price per semester for college students has been raised from $50 to $130 per semester JUST TO USE THE FACILITY. The price for an instructional class for the same period of time is actually less expensive, which absolutely boggles my mind. If you are not a student, these prices are nearly double the amount that I have listed.
As a student at FSU, I use pottery as an outlet for the stress that comes from being in college. While I can say that this is a wonderful facility, I have a huge problem with a recent decision that they made.
By raising their prices this much, the Art Center has essentially lost the patronage of their largest clientele: students. Most college students cannot afford to drop this much money on a hobby. They may take one or two classes but with prices like these it is unlikely that most will return. In fact when I tried to get my friends involved in pottery, their number one concern was that it was too expensive. I personally feel ripped off by the whole ordeal as I could have taken my $65 to a studio with much more reasonable prices.
The Oglesby Union Art Center is top notch in many ways. The staff is always approachable and ready to answer any questions. The setup of the studio space is very conducive to the needs of each class. The prices for classes and supplies are extremely reasonable. In general, it is a great community consisting of students, graduates, and members of the general public.
