the food is really good thats all
My child loves this school as much as I do
The school doesn't really have any strong points. They don't teach children to think for themselves, and actually discourage it. They have slightly better than average academics than a public school, but larger public schools have a wider variety of classes, with more "advanced" options. There are no non-core classes available (except Turkish language), and few extra-curricular activities or sports. They have plentiful but never interesting homework. They have no creativity or flexibility to the material. There's virtually no out-door or off-campus instruction. Material is taught in the same dry, stale and boring way as in public schools. Basically, their academic instruction is that of a mediocre public school that happens to have fewer students.
Where the School of Math and Science really shines though, is the administration. They have no concern for their students. They don't respect student rights. They don't comply with their own policies and procedures. They have no respect for parents. And they treat the teachers like nothing more than employees.
Last year the administration had some difficulties with some staff and policies, however this year they have made a complete turn around, they got rid of the old secretary who was a complete nightmare and replace her with the sweetest most competent ladies...Mrs. Martin and Ms. Maryweather are a dream, and my daughters 3rd grade teacher Ms. Zuschlag works so hard to keep the lines of communication open. After school care is nothing I cringe at any more with Ms. Stafford takes such good care to make sure the children are safe and picked up by the proper authorized people. Big ups Principal Temel, good job!
They have deliberately fostered an environment where the students do what they must, but get away with what they can. The students don't care about the rules; they care about getting caught. Despite being a small school and a "community", most of the students don't respect each other, let alone the teachers and administrators. They don't work together; they don't help each other; they don't care about each other, aside from friends. Worst of all, the school takes away any enjoyment of learning that a child might have. The administration's goal is to take any curiosity, wonder, creativity, independence, joy, fun and compassion, and replace them with facts. Unfortunately, as I stated in the beginning, they don't even do a good job at the latter. The only reason I give them two stars, is because many public schools are so bad. TSMS is a little bit better at being horrible in all the same ways.
My son is the youngest of three and was finding it difficult to overcome some challenges that he developed in elementary school at Springwood. That horror story is for another place. We tried everything and then homeschool and virtual school before finally getting him enrolled in this brilliant institution. The structured day and the focus on academic achievement was exactly what my son needed to feel permitted to succeed. He went from struggling with reading and paying attention in every subject to the A/B honor roll in less than 6 weeks. He is now being offered advancement to a more challenging math class and is enjoying the Science Olympiad after school. My son and I both Love this school.
