I've lived in Tallahassee for around 9 years. I've asked people for a place that serves country cooking or soul food. Back where I grew up there was a place on every corner in Northwest Alabama. Not once has anyone pointed me to Nick's Cafe. I found it on my own today. And it was exactly what I was looking for. Delicious.
Extremely rude and unprofessional staff and ownership. On my first visit they prepared my order wrong twice. When I finally decided to try again and call in a order for myself and my colleagues the lady taking orders over the phone was rude and disrespectful and then hung up on me when I asked her name. I called back to speak to the owner to no avail as he was just as rude and uncooperative. I'll eat McDonalds before I put up with their attitudes again..
I have been going to Nicks for nearly 30 years for lunches and breakfast on Saturday. I love this place because it is the next best thing to home cooking. Unfortunately, economics has forced some changes, but they still have good food served by great people. A must see while it is still around. One of the best burgers in town. My wife's complaint is they don't have spaghetti often enough.
One of the best home cooking restaurants I have ever eaten at. Give it a try you will truly enjoy your meal.
Picked up a car from Jake's Brakes on Pershing off Monroe. To Jake I asked, "is that choke and puke down the block?" any good. "Nick's has been there 30 years.", sez Jake. Not psyched, I pull down the way and parked. Nick's was the ultimate Tallahassee grill. Two eggs as you like (mine were sunny side and perfect), Grits (like Granny's...perfect no-frills grits), crisp tasty regular old bacon, white toast with those adorable little jelly packs. All served with a smile and some good basic hot black coffee. Unfortunately, I may have "lost" some cash there. Checking now.
