I've worked for DCF mental health and JACHO (joint accredited commission hospital office) and I can say for fact and truth this facility is not up to DCF OR JACHO standards to even be operating in the state of Florida. The doctors have no actual national provider number with DCF to whom I've checked dr. Defaira. They do not listen to the concern of the patient or send for updates medical records. I self admitted to applachee 5 years ago and was given medication that sent me into psychosis. I told the doctor that I was in psychosis when I came in feeling angry and needed my medication adjusted because it was the weekend and my family and I were out of town in this city. They kept me for 3 months and were not forthcoming with my blood test results. Apparently I was dying. The medication caused my white blood cell count to drop dangerously low after later inspection of my mother who is a mental health clinician. They put me on injections by force of 5 nurses with three seperate needles causing me to have violent outbursts to which they restrained me on a metal bench for over an hour unable to move and when released from this seclusion 3 nurses tackled me; when I was lying on the ground with 3 men untop of me the doctor came from the neighboring room after hearing me scream like a 3 year old who just broke a bone, stand over me and give a brief chuckle and say she's faking. After being injected with two needles (haldol {that I have an adverse affect to and have mentioned} and benedryal) I was escorted back to my room where a patient who they've been told was violating my boundaries was. After telling the staff repeatedly that this young woman was taking my things and touching me they did nothing to restrain or Medicate her instead after becoming irate and attacking the woman without other means of peace I was transferred to a floor that did not take insurance where I was told by staff " we can't hit the clients without going to jail... but you can... so if you have a couple of fights we'll give you adavan... you know the good stuff that makes you high" by this time it was month two and my family asked for my release to which they refused. The medication was not changed but continued to the point of personality changes where I began to curse and belittle my family over the phone which the staff saw as a green light to goad me into fighting other patients. As well as seeing other co-ed patients enter each other rooms for coitis. 5 years later with the memory of this horrid place far out of my mind I returned thinking it was under new supervision (or so I thought) and received similar treatment. They were getting ready to force me to take the same medication that almost caused me to die to the point of threats till I called my father who is my medical gaurdian for this very reason to tell them my primary psychiatrist has me on different medication. When I asked for depression medication because I am treated for anxiety and bi polar I was told to "meditate" in my crisis state.
This facility is a complete mess. only after years of my complaining to upper management did i FINALLY get treated with respect instead of prejudice by the black staff . The black staff workers are not only abusive but extremely prejudice, poorly trained and poorly supervised. i too have been given the wrong medications by this facility. Apalachee has also had many programs shut down for this very reason. they do not correspond with DCF regulations are CONSTANTLY abusing patients. if you had a positive experience here, it was bc you were a large stature man or a black man/woman. Mental health care in the south only benefits the black population here. so if you're any other ethnicity other than black, don't go here unless you have an attorney.
I was violently assaulted, with racial prejudice, because of the staff's willful negligence. They tried to deny me my right to press charges, but failed. I ended up leaving this facility with a chest contusion.
Perspective is a funny thing. I was treated very well there. Everyone was very nice to me. I was there for about 2 weeks or so. I would have loved to leave sooner. But the Doctor knew I wasn't ready. It got discouraging seeing other patients leave before me but I knew my time was coming and it did. Everyone was very professional and kind. I even remember filling out a survey. The place wants to know how to improve and treat you better that's so much better than other places. The Oasis room was so awesome. You could get away from the other patients for a time and just rest and relax for the time you put down. You should have seen me before I went in. I was very manic. Walking around naked with a trash can on my head. 3 cops came to my house. I remember being so manic they had to cuff me. They took me to Apalachee and I'm so glad they did! 2 years and no manic episodes since. I would recommend them to anyone facing any mental issues.
Long story short this place is full of gross negligence and in a crunch situation people don't remember in full detail what went on because of the medication they give.
I hope my story helped you
THIS PLACE NEEDS TO BE SHUT DOWN
Well the couple times I been admitted I can honestly say I was treated with dignity and respect. I would recommend this facility to anyone who seeking a mental health evaluation. The only problems I encountered were with the clients but that's understandable I guess.
I suggest you never bring a loved one here for an evaluation and if you have I advise you ask your loved one for their story in writing and report it to FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF CHILDREN AND FAMILIES or DCF for short.
