4-It was a smaller center with smaller group sizes. (I was interested in a place with focused care and I especially wanted a treatment team that would actually know me as a person. I didn't want to get lost in a system and the idea of a big center was just too much for me.)
I will admit that I was a bit uncertain about getting started with treatment but I decided that I was going to commit to it and I'm so glad I did because IT WAS WORTH IT. Life is so much better now.
I have heard better things about the adult program.
"In my distress, I called to the Lord; I cried to my God for help. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came before him into his ears." Psalm 18:6 (That is exactly what happened to us; my 14 year-old daughter had been struggling with anorexia for over 2 years and was hospitalized as a result. I was calling out to the Lord for what would be the best avenue to help her and He gave me these scriptures.)..."He parted the heavens and came down...He made darkness his covering, his CANOPY around him." Psalm 18: 9-11( God very clearly spoke this scripture to me showing me that He knew the urgency of my request and He understood the depth of her struggles. He promised to be in the darkness with her protecting her like a Canopy. "He reached down from on high and took hold of me; He drew me out of deep waters...He brought me to the spacious place; He rescued me because He delighted in me." Psalm 18:16-19
The staff was extremely rude and entirely unhelpful. There also seems to be a strong discrimination against men among the staff. I went to pick up my daughter from an appointment (usually my wife picks her up) and was treated like an absolute criminal. Take my advice avoid this place like the plague repeat DO NOT take your loved ones here.
The program works. (I was in the Residential Program and then the Partial Hospitalization Program) It's truly amazing what you learn about yourself, about why the ED developed and how to design a life FREE from ED. I can say with certainty that I would never been able to do this on my own. It was a much more complex situation than I realized.
It was the most amazing, blessed experience of my life, and they really do deal with the root issues. They were really warm and welcoming. The therapists were extremely knowledgeable about the complexities of eating disorders and they are obviously saints or angels because they were accepting and non-judgmental. They just want you to be okay. They were a phenomenal support system for me and I always felt accepted and respected.
My daughter is my life thank you Ashley and your staff for saving my daughter life God bless
Eating disorders don’t have to end with just managing our symptoms or just getting by with being somewhat “better”. There IS complete freedom out there.
I never even received an apology for their negligence.
In case you're interested, I did a good deal of due diligence when researching where to get treatment, Here are some of the reasons I chose Canopy Cove.
The admissions (community outreach) employee, Donda Combs is very friendly while trying to convince you to choose Canopy Cove. However, she misrepresents your estimated insurance charges and is actually the facility owners daughter. She has a clear stake in you selecting this facility.
2- CC was one of the most experienced options in ED Treatment plus they were very familiar with how to treat ED with dual-diagnosis. (I had a diagnosis for anxiety)
The adolescent program is not up to par. My 14 year old daughter did gain weight while in the program but it was because of the sedentary environment. She received some skills to help in her recovery but overall it is not a great facility. The adolescent house provides limited hot water for showers. My daughter said most of the time there was no hot water. Some of the therapy assistants discussed how they "don't get paid enough to put up with this".
One positive note... the therapist were very helpful but she only saw them a few times a week. Primarily they are with the therapy assistants which have a very high turnover rate.
1-I had a friend of the family that had been there for treatment who had an excellent experience.
I was at Canopy Cove for severe bulimia. They gave me my life back. I can tell you it WORKS.
Eating disorders are hell to deal with so this type of headache should be the last thing you worry about. I hope my experience helps you choose a better route for your child.
However, do your homework before sending your adolescent here. My daughter was not being monitored well and it allowed to get away from their care. She called me before the facility to tell me to come get her she left.
Canopy Cove was that spacious place for us. It was her protection, it was the answer to His promise, it was where she was rescued. The staff was friendly. She was loved and cared for. It was the first time we ever heard the message that healing from an eating disorder was possible. God has been so faithful to us on this journey. I finally have my daughter back. There have been some bumps along the recovery journey but Canopy Cove gave her the tools needed to get through her struggles. I thank the Lord often for Canopy Cove.
3-They had a step-down program that I could move to once I made progress. (I was concerned about going from a full residential program to "home' where things would be back to normal so I especially wanted a place where I could have a step-down option.)
I rarely leave reviews but when something like an ED is controlling your life and then you find a place that helps you get FREE from it, and move on with life, well, that deserves sharing.
